Around the Web: Writing Advice, Tweets, Sci-Fi, and a Bookshop Winner

14 Sep 2018

Welcome back to Around the Web! Today I’ve got some fun and helpful links for you to check out as you finish up the week.

Advice for Young Writers and Illustrators

Debbi Ridpath Ohi runs a blog called Inkygirl and has been collecting advice for young writers and illustrators from a number of authors she’s worked with. Of course, you don’t have to be young to appreciate some thoughtful advice.

Writing Tips from Professors

And since we’re looking at advice, and it is September, check out these essay writing tips from professors. A lot of these tips apply to creative writing as well, so don’t discount them if you’re not in school anymore.

Tweets for Book Addicts

Now here’s something that’ll put a smile on your face. BuzzFeed has a list of tweets you’re gonna love if you’re addicted to books.  From comments on never ending TBR piles to book smells and e-reader gripes, these tweets are definitely relatable.

Is Sci-Fi the most important genre?

Author Yuval Noah Harari thinks so. Speaking on Wired’s Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy he spoke on the importance of science fiction and its potential to shape “the understanding of the public.” If you’re a fan of science fiction, or are interested in technology and the way it’s affecting our world, you may want to check out the podcast or read the summary.

Winning a Bookshop

What bibliophile hasn’t thought about running a bookstore? Well, that dream is now a reality for one bookshop customer.

Bookends, a bookshop in Cardigan Wales, was opened four years ago by Paul Morris, who is now retiring. Though he could have sold the shop, he decided to raffle it off to customers who spent more than £20. Ceisjan Van Heerden, from Finland, entered the raffle while shopping and won. Read the full story from the Guardian, and let us know what you would do if you won a bookstore in the comments.

That’s it for this week, folks. Happy Friday!
