Bedside Books
Imagine, you're reading a book while on a trip and you notice there's only a few pages left. You're excited to find out how the plot wraps up, but behind that excitement, there's a certain discomfort - the kind that comes from knowing once you close that book, you don't have anything left to read. Disaster, am I right? Well, according to Forbes, there's a new program in the works to make running out of books while travelling a thing of the past.
Bedside Reading is a marketing program that aims to promote books by placing them in hotel rooms, where guests can pick them up at their leisure and take them when they leave. Free books are always a treat, so I know I'd be happy to see one on my nightstand.
Mary Shelley to Hit the Big Screen
Frankenstein has been adapted a number of times, but it's the author behind the tale who's getting the spotlight now. Mary Shelley will tell the story of Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (played by Elle Fanning) and share how she fell for Percy Bysshe Shelley (played by Douglas Booth) and wrote the classic novel.
The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Fest in 2017, says BookRiot, and it'll hit cinemas in May.
Happy Birthday Beverly Cleary!
Speaking of iconic women writers, Beverly Cleary celebrated her 102nd birthday yesterday. That's right, the Ramona and Beezus author is 102! In honour of the occassion, CBC shared "100 Things You Might Not Know About Beverly Cleary." My favourites have to do with the relationship between Cleary and fellow kid-lit author Judy Bloom.
Library Week
Our American readers may be aware that it's National Library Week in the U.S. (In Canada, we celebrate Libraries in October). As part of the festivities, the American Library Association released its annual State of America’s Libraries Report, which provides info on issues affecting libraries. It's a long read, and maybe a bit dense for those without special interest, but one fun tidbit is the top ten most challenged books of 2017.
